Urgent Lemons

£450.00

‘Urgent Lemons’ is the signature style piece for Lucy Caddel. The title refers to an anecdote from her first year at university studying fine art where she was asked to paint fruit in oils. At the ensuing crit, her Northern Irish tutor said ‘well if is possible to paint an URGENT LEMON Lucy you’ve certainly done that here- it’s an urgent f-ing Lemon.’ This phrase stuck with the artist and lemons have become a recurring theme in her work.

For Lucy, Lemons represent concentrated life, light and love. This symbolism is related to the poet Goethe’s ‘travels in Italy’ in which he asks ‘Kennst du das land wo die zitronen blumen?’ (ido you know the land where the Lemon Trees flower?) - coming from cold Northern Europe, the possibilities of love and life that are unlocked by Italy become clear to him in the warmth and sunlight of Limone in Italy.
