Are You a colour Lover?

Are you a colour-lover?

One of the first things that people talk about in my work is my use of colour. Highly-saturated, pigment-drenched, rich, vibrant colour. ‘Dopamine dressing for your walls’.

Unashamedly, I absolutely love colour and always have done. For some time this wasn’t a trend in art, and in fact it can still be quite divisive - there is still a significant ‘greige-brigade’ out there who fully uphold the neutral palette…

But I’m looking at the torrential rain outside right now (again) and feeling all the seasonal lows of days getting shorter and light getting less and I think there is only one way to go.

My work uses all the senses, but first and foremost it’s a feast for the eyes. I spent a long time living and working in Lima, Peru 🇵🇪 and also travelling in Mexico 🇲🇽 and Central America. The indigenous textiles and hand-painted street art fired my brain - I love the neons and huge bold fonts. Frida Kahlo’s ‘Casa Azul’ 💙 is still a constant source of inspiration for me with green cacti 🌵 and orange 🍊 terracotta planters pitted against Yves Klein blue plaster walls.

As the days get darker and colder, and the news on TV gets more terrifying, anxiety is becoming a pandemic that we are all struggling with on a day-to-day basis. And if you’ve experienced anything like personal loss in your life, maybe you are also drawn to all things life-affirming to populate your home.

I say go for it! Bring on all the colours 🌈! Let them sing and shine and clash and glitter. Don’t worry if they don’t ‘go together’ or ‘fit with the colour scheme’- if you love it - put it up!
